Enhancing Dialogic Argumentation in Mathematics and Science
2017
This paper reports on a teacher professional development (PD) programme addressing dialogic argumentation in mathematics and science classrooms. While argumentation skills are becoming more and more important in an increasingly polarised society, the social aspect of argumentation is often neglected in secondary education. Moreover, it is agreed that genuine argumentation requires time and space in classroom dialogue. There have been calls for research delving into how teachers could be familiarised with dialogic argumentation so that they could foster such dialogue in students. The described PD programme features versatile and continuous cooperation between scholars and participating teach…
A SYMMETRIC AND POSITIVE DEFINITE BEM FOR 2-D FORCED VIBRATIONS
1997
A BEM formulation for 2D elastodynamics in the time domain has been presented. The formulation gives a resolving system that involves boundary displacements only. The stiffness and mass matrices of the boundary discretized body are frequency independent, symmetric and positive definite
A fuzzy ranking strategy for portfolio selection applied to the Spanish stock market
2007
In this paper we present a fuzzy ranking procedure for the portfolio selection problem. The uncertainty on the returns of each portfolio is approximated by means of a trapezoidal fuzzy number. The expected return and risk of the portfolio are then characteristics of that fuzzy number. A rank index that accounts for both expected return and risk is defined, allowing the decision-maker to compare different portfolios. The paper ends with an application of that fuzzy ranking strategy to the Spanish stock market.
Regularized RBF Networks for Hyperspectral Data Classification
2004
In this paper, we analyze several regularized types of Radial Basis Function (RBF) Networks for crop classification using hyperspectral images. We compare the regularized RBF neural network with Support Vector Machines (SVM) using the RBF kernel, and AdaBoost Regularized (ABR) algorithm using RBF bases, in terms of accuracy and robustness. Several scenarios of increasing input space dimensionality are tested for six images containing six crop classes. Also, regularization, sparseness, and knowledge extraction are paid attention.
Toward Parametrization of Precipitating Shallow Cumulus Cloud Organization via Moisture Variance
2021
The influence of the initial vertical moisture profile on precipitating shallow cumulus cloud organization in terms of the column‐averaged moisture variance is investigated using large‐eddy simulations. Five idealized simulations based on the Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean field experiment with different initial moisture profiles are investigated. All cases simulate precipitating shallow cumulus convection in a marine sub‐tropical region under large‐scale subsidence. The results show that the moisture variance is mainly generated through the interaction of the moisture flux and the moisture gradient in the gradient production term at the top of the boundary layer. The development is charact…
Per una genealogia della biopoetica. Da Aristotele a Todorov
2021
In recent years, literary theory in Italy has begun to address the question of the biological meaning of narration and lit…
Nanoscale ear drum: graphene based nanoscale sensors.
2012
The difficulty in determining the mass of a sample increases as its size diminishes. At the nanoscale, there are no direct methods for resolving the mass of single molecules or nanoparticles and so more sophisticated approaches based on electromechanical phenomena are required. More importantly, one demands that such nanoelectromechanical techniques could provide not only information about the mass of the target molecules but also about their geometrical properties. In this sense, we report a theoretical study that illustrates in detail how graphene membranes can operate as nanoelectromechanical mass-sensor devices. Wide graphene sheets were exposed to different types and amounts of molecul…
Blow-up collocation solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra integral equations
2011
In this paper, collocation methods are used for detecting blow-up solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations. To do this, we introduce the concept of "blow-up collocation solution" and analyze numerically some blow-up time estimates using collocation methods in particular examples where previous results about existence and uniqueness can be applied. Finally, we discuss the relationships between necessary conditions for blow-up of collocation solutions and exact solutions.
Improving computation efficiency using input and architecture features for a virtual screening application
2023
Virtual screening is an early stage of the drug discovery process that selects the most promising candidates. In the urgent computing scenario it is critical to find a solution in a short time frame. In this paper, we focus on a real-world virtual screening application to evaluate out-of-kernel optimizations, that consider input and architecture features to improve the computation efficiency on GPU. Experiment results on a modern supercomputer node show that we can almost double the performance. Moreover, we implemented the optimization using SYCL and it provides a consistent benefit with the CUDA optimization. A virtual screening campaign can use this gain in performance to increase the nu…
Seam Puckering Objective Evaluation Method for Sewing Process
2015
The paper presents an automated method for the assessment and classification of puckering defects detected during the preproduction control stage of the sewing machine or product inspection. In this respect, we have presented the possible causes and remedies of the wrinkle nonconformities. Subjective factors related to the control environment and operators during the seams evaluation can be reduced using an automated system whose operation is based on image processing. Our implementation involves spectral image analysis using Fourier transform and an unsupervised neural network, the Kohonen Map, employed to classify material specimens, the input images, into five discrete degrees of quality…
